USED AIR BAGS
When a vehicle is presented to the collision shop for repairs, or an estimate, a close visual inspection and function check is critical for determining the depth of the potential airbag portion of the estimate. Besides assessing the physical visual elements of sheet metal and other obvious damage, an electrical damage assessment is also needed. The vehicle’s control module network can give a wealth of information regarding non-obvious damage. For example, even if an obvious deployment has occurred (all those deflated bags hanging out), the person assessing the damage needs to turn the key on (KOEO) and inspect the air bag light and make sure it bulb checks. If there is an obvious deployment you know to expect the airbag light to remain on. But this does not tell you the complete story about why the air bag light is on. If any other deployment device had been triggered that is not obvious (front and rear seat belts and head rests for example) the light will remain on. Only a scan with an OEM level scan tool can answer these questions.
Lastly, and more importantly, if the air bag light is off, there could still be trouble codes indicating previously stored intermittent faults that you need to be aware of. I have seen cases where the air bag light itself had failed leading to a false assumption that the associated systems were OK when actually they were not.
USED FUEL PUMPS
A car engine burns a mixture of petrol and air. Petrol is pumped along a pipe from the tank and mixed with air in the carburettor , from which the engine sucks in the mixture.
In the fuel-injection system, used on some engines, the petrol and air are mixed in the inlet manifold .
A fuel pump draws petrol out of the tank through a pipe to the carburettor .
The pump may be mechanical worked by the engine – or it may be electric, in which case it is usually next to or even inside the fuel tank .
Keeping the petrol tank safe
For safety, the petrol tank is placed at the opposite end of the car from the engine.
Inside the tank, a float works an electrical sender unit that transmits current to the fuel gauge, signalling how much petrol is in the tank.
The tank has an air vent – usually a pipe or a small hole in the filler cap to allow air in as the tank empties. Some of the latest systems have a carbon filter , so that fuel fumes do not escape.
USED ALTERNATOR
An automotive charging system is made up of three major components: the battery, the voltage regulator and an alternator. The alternator works with the battery to generate power for the electrical components of a vehicle, like the interior and exterior lights, and the instrument panel. An alternator gets its name from the term alternating current (AC).
Alternators are typically found near the front of the engine and are driven by the crankshaft, which converts the pistons’ up-and-down movement into circular movement. (To learn more about the basic parts of car engines, read How Car Engines Work.) Some early model vehicles used a separate drive belt from the crankshaft pulley to the alternator pulley, but most cars today have a serpentine belt, or one belt that drives all components that rely on crankshaft power. Most alternators are mounted using brackets that bolt to a specific point on the engine. One of the brackets is usually a fixed point, while the other is adjustable to tighten the drive belt.
USED WIRRING HARNESS
AEM’s Universal Core V8 Wiring engine harness (PN 30-3805) is terminated with Infinity Series 7 ECU connectors, power/ground leads and an OEM power distribution block with 5 relays and 7 fuses. Special care was taken to build redundancy into the power distribution system to increase overall reliability.
High-Performance DTM-Style connectors terminate the leads for dual UEGO wideband air/fuel ratio sensors, wheel speed sensors, AEMnet (AEM’s CAN bus), dual 8-pin auxiliary ports, cam & crank, idle, injectors and coils sub harnesses. High-Performance DTM-Style connectors and pins are included for the auxiliary ports. Flying leads are included for permanent and switched power, manifold pressure (MAP), oil pressure, fuel pressure, air temperature, coolant temperature and throttle position.
The wiring is covered in an automotive-grade loom for enhanced longevity and the power/ground leads are heavy-duty serrated versions to ensure the best connection. A firewall grommet is included for a clean pass-through. All wires and connectors are labeled for ease of installation.
